The birds chirping this morning and a few peeks at sunshine has me excited for the warm weather to come, and when you're a florist, the warm weather means a lot of things (i.e. wedding season) but the one on my mind today was growing our own flowers this year!
Fun Fact: My mom's gardening was my first intro to flowers. We actually have an annual tradition of kicking off the spring together at Woldhuis Farms in Grant Park! We don't have a yard right now, so my mom lets me use her plots for Moment in Time's cut flowers... Can you guess her compensation? Unlimited access to beautiful blooms for the bud vases scattered around her house.
Ok back on task... With summer on the brain, I sat down and worked on my seed order for this year.
Here's what I ordered (so far!)
I grabbed some tried and trues... Zinnias and Cosmos, adding some new colors to the mix
I'm trying to up my game in drying flowers, so I grabbed a few variations of Strawflower and Billy Buttons... I hope to use these in wreaths or other projects in the fall.
Last year, we fell in love with our hanging Amaranthus.. These aren't the prettiest to have in the garden as they're tall stalks without blooms (my mom was actually confused LOL), but gosh do I love having them for our arrangements. The first thing I grabbed was these seeds - both green and burgundy, and this year we're adding hot biscuits (a burnt orange) which I'm excited for in the fall!
Blooms are always the shining stars, but excited to expand our selection of fillers and textures, namely Gyposphilia, Statice, & Yarrow... I have all of these regularly in our cooler so excited to grow them ourselves!
If you've read this far and you're wondering why I haven't mentioned some of my favorite flowers - ranunculus or lisianthus... Well, I try to know my own limits and skillsets, and at this point, those guys are a bit too finnicky for me.. Maybe one day, but today is not that day! For now, I prefer the "throw seeds into the ground and blooms magically appear" method ;)
I'm hoping this order means we're one step closer to sunny days ahead! Until then - find a little sunshine in our shop! Stop by for new arrivals or treat yourself to a budvase for that dose of green you so desperately need.
XO,
Angela
